The Sporting Spirit

When India lost the 3rd test match against the English, Many ‘fans’ of cricket said, India played this match only to lose.” People, who hailed Sachin as the Master Blaster, booed him that day. Rediff.com said that the spectators did the right thing by booing him. Dravid, who is respected for his equanimity all over the world, was slandered for choosing to field when we won the toss. Had we won the match, the same people would have praised him for his risk taking abilities. Everybody in the team was lampooned.

Phew…

Cricket is just a game. It ought to be watched for the spirit of the game. Be critical about the game. Not the players. Stop doing yagas and yagnas for victories. This is not a game of life and death. Stop treating the players like gods. They are just talented mortals. Most importantly, don't ever treat it as a national sentiment. A match lost will not cost the nation's pride.

In the 3rd test, we certainly lacked fire. But when things go wrong, as they sometimes will, the team needs to show resilience. And the supporters, patience. The Team India needs to buck up for the matches to come. Let’s wait and see what it has got to offer. Let’s wish them the best. And hope for the best. But let us not attach emotionally to it. Becuase that doesn't bode well for the sport. Beacuase that's not sporting spirit.

  • U are right abt ppl getting unnecessarily emotional about just a game. But criticism should always be there. In this case Dravids decision to field (the team management in fact) has been criticised not after we lost the match but even at the time of the toss as it showed lack of a clear cut strategy and a sign of lack of courage. The former bcoz the english wud rather bat on a pitch with a slight tinge of green than one which turns and jumps(which it did from the 2nd day) and the latter bcoz batting first on that strip wudve sent the right signals to the opposition. people neednt slander him but thats only natural bcoz the margin was so heavy

  • @vinod
criticism ought to be there. but not desperate fanaticism. i never talked of the strategies and game-plans. i jus talked of the sporting spirit that can make the world of sport better.

  • that kind of criticism tells an altogether different story about human mentality. it reveals their sentiments and passions. imagining themselves in the place of the cricketers and enjoying the game, is one common reason why they get so upset. well, there is always a danger when passion is around the corner. :D may be dravid and others also love this kind of reaction. hope they take these things positively, otherwise it would be very tough for them..
